How the person responds to your disclosure matters and should be used as important feedback.
Healthy responses to your disclosure include:
- Curiosity and not panicking
- Relevant (indicate listening) and respectful questions
- Emotional regulation, they are not over or under reacting
Unhealthy responses might include:
- Minimizing that happened to you (Well, at least you’re healthy now, could be worse)
- Over-caretaking, trying to step in too early into relationship
- Non-responsiveness, avoidance, changing the subject quickly
