Support for Partners of Cancer Survivors

Open communication with partner is important

Note that couples receive very little training in how to communicate effectively and appropriately with one another

Here is an activity to try:

  • Take 3-5 uninterrupted minutes to share your thoughts, feelings, and fears regarding cancer and your intimate relationship.
  • After listening, the partner should attempt to state their understanding of what they heard, clarifying until agreement on what was said occurs.
  • It is important for both partners to express their concerns and receive responses that validate and confirm what was shared

What does this interaction look like?
